A number of US colleges and organizations provide undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral scholarships to African and developing-country students. Some of these scholarships in the United States are expressly designed for overseas students from Africa.

Michigan State University participates in the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program.

 

 

The MasterCard Foundation has teamed with Michigan State University to give full tuition scholarships to Sub-Saharan African undergraduate and graduate students. The foundation will provide $45 million to the university to assist 185 scholars over the course of the nine-year program, which comprises 100 four-year undergraduates and 85 master’s degree students.

Undergraduate and Master’s degrees are available.

Previous application deadline was February 15th.

Scholars Program of the MasterCard Foundation

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars program’s objective is to educate and nurture intelligent but economically underprivileged young people in Africa and developing countries who have a demonstrated “give-back” mindset and will contribute to the continent’s development……..

Within the next 8 to 10 years, the Scholarship Program is expected to help 15,000 young people. The following US universities are collaborating with the MasterCard Foundation to provide scholarships to African and developing-country students. Wellesley College’s MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program

 

 

Wellesley will give comprehensive support to nine (9) African women as part of the Scholars Program, including scholarships, mentoring, counseling, and internship opportunities for undergraduate study.

Stanford University’s MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program

Over the next eight years, the MasterCard Foundation education program at Stanford University USA will provide comprehensive support to 20 bright but economically disadvantaged African students seeking scholarships in the United States. Each year, the Scholars Program will fund five (5) undergraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2012, Arizona State University welcomed ten undergraduate students from seven African countries as the first class of MasterCard Foundation Scholars.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program

The Fulbright Program provides grants to international students pursuing a Master’s or PhD degree. Scholarships are also available for non-degree postgraduate courses. Tuition, textbooks, travel, a living allowance, and health insurance are all covered by the grant.

MMMF Scholarship for Women from Developing Countries in the United States and Canada

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) awards grants to women from developing nations in order to enable them further their education and increase their leadership abilities in order to better the lives of women and children in developing countries. The MMMF gives out grants worth about $12,000 apiece.

Women from poor countries who are currently enrolled at accredited universities in the United States or Canada are eligible to apply.

International Fellowship for Women of AAUW

AAUW International Fellowships are offered to women who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States for full-time study or research in the United States.

Applicants must have achieved the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in the United States by September 30 of the previous year and must have applied to their proposed institutions of study by the time of the application.

The award is valued at $18,000 for Masters students, 20,000 for PhD students, and $30,000 for Postdoctoral students.

Clark University Global Scholars Scholarships

Clark University’s Global Scholars Program is open to high school students who are NOT permanent residents or citizens of the United States, as well as U.S. citizens/permanent residents who live abroad and will complete their full secondary school education outside the United States. The program includes a $15,000 scholarship (($60,000 for four years contingent on meeting academic standards for renewal) and a $2,500 taxable stipend for a paid internship or research assistantship done for academic credit during the summer following the sophomore or junior year.
